MLK Day of Service

The annual MLK Day of Service is about coming together to honor Dr. King’s life and legacy, and helping further his dream for peace by serving our neighbors and communities. The Leduc Center and SouthCoast Serves partner each year with Gifts to Give and Bristol County Savings Bank to honor and serve Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy.

Dr. King once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?'”

In 2016, the MLK Day of Service was expanded and included events both in New Bedford and Fall River. In New Bedford, the event included a teach-in, a spoken word presentation, and a magic show for area middle school students. Afterwards, the students participate in a march to Gifts to Give where they participated in a service rally, sorting donations that are distributed to needy families.

In Fall River, the MLK Day of Service included a spoken word presentation and the reading of March, a graphic novel by Congressman John Lewis. Local middle school students then participated in a service event where they cut up strips of recycled plastic and weaved them into mats for the homeless.
